Georgia inmate sentenced to life allegedly sent bombs to Alaska courthouse, charges reveal

The indictment of a man serving a life sentence in a Georgia prison for making and mailing bombs to federal courthouses in Anchorage and Washington, D.C. has raised questions about how he was able to create and send the explosives from inside a maximum-security facility. David Cassady, 55, allegedly sent the bombs in January 2020 from a now-closed state prison in Reidsville, Georgia. The motive for targeting the courthouses is unclear, and it is unknown if Cassady has any ties to Alaska. Despite responses from the Anchorage Police Department’s bomb squad and FBI, the package contained only a possible incendiary device, not an improvised explosive device. Cassady has been in prison since 1993 for kidnapping and sexual assault charges, as well as other convictions while incarcerated. He is currently held at Phillips State Prison in Buford, Georgia. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia has not provided additional information beyond what was disclosed in the indictment. This incident raises concerns about security measures in prisons and highlights the need for heightened vigilance in preventing dangerous activities within correctional facilities.
