NATO celebrated its 75th anniversary with discussions on providing long-term military support to Ukraine and addressing Russia’s aggressive behavior in hybrid warfare. Meanwhile, a brewing corruption scandal known as “Russiagate” emerged, with politicians accused of being bribed by Moscow to influence EU public opinion ahead of the European elections. Transparency International EU Director Nicholas Aiossa emphasized the need for stronger anti-corruption measures within EU institutions to combat the culture of impunity that allows corruption to thrive. Despite some recent improvements, there are concerns about the decline in rule of law and the ability to fight corruption in certain member states. Aiossa expressed skepticism about whether the political class in Europe has truly learned its lesson, citing weak responses to corruption scandals and a lack of structural reforms. As the European Parliament faces elections, there is still time to address these issues and restore public trust in the integrity of EU institutions.
