The No Labels party has announced that it will no longer be endorsing a “unity” candidate for the presidency, citing a lack of viable candidates with a credible path to winning the White House. Although the group had courted centrists like Sen. Joe Manchin and others, they were unable to convince any candidates to run. The group has gained ballot access in at least 16 states, posing a potential threat to Joe Biden’s bid for reelection.
Former Sen. Joe Lieberman, the founding chairman of No Labels, recently passed away after suffering from a fall in New York City. In light of this news, No Labels National Director and former Democratic Rep. Joe Cunningham has announced that he will be voting for Biden in the upcoming election.
The group had also reached out to Republicans Chris Christie and Nikki Haley, both of whom declined to run. Despite Americans’ apparent openness to an independent presidential candidate and a desire for unifying national leadership, the group has decided to stand down due to the lack of viable candidates emerging for their endorsement. The group stated in a press release that they would only offer their ballot line to candidates who had a realistic chance of winning the presidency.
