A fire at Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Vermont office is being investigated as arson by the Burlington Fire Department. The incident involved an unknown man spraying accelerant on the entrance door, setting it on fire, and fleeing the scene. Fortunately, no one was injured, but there was damage to the door and water damage in other parts of the building. The suspect has not been apprehended, and the motive is unknown. Sanders’ state director expressed gratitude to the first responders and confirmed that no staff or individuals in the building were harmed. The incident is being jointly investigated by the Burlington Fire Marshal’s office, Burlington Police Department, and Vermont State Police. This incident comes as Capitol Police reported an increase in threat assessment cases last year, including cases involving concerning statements and direct threats. Sanders, 82, is in his third term as Senator and previously served in the House and as Mayor of Burlington. The investigation is ongoing, with collaboration from various law enforcement agencies.
