Democratic lawmakers in Juneau showed their support as students from local campuses participated in a walkout and took over the Alaska Capitol, disrupting legislative proceedings. House Minority Leader Calvin Schrage described the event as a demonstration of democracy, contrasting it with the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in January 2021.
The protest was part of a statewide walkout organized by students and education industry union members, aimed at advocating for increased funding for schools. The demonstration was particularly focused on Senate Bill 140, which had been vetoed and was intended to enhance the funding formula for schools.
With school districts facing declining student enrollment and financial challenges, students are calling for more support for education. Juneau, for instance, is considering consolidating campuses due to budget constraints. The protest highlighted the students’ frustrations and the urgent need for additional resources for schools.
Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Genevieve Mina, Maxine Dilbert, CJ McCormick, and Zack Fields, stood in solidarity with the students during the protest. While some legislators locked their doors to avoid the disruption, others joined in expressing support for the students’ cause.
The walkout and Capitol takeover were a powerful demonstration of student activism and advocacy for education funding in Alaska. As students continue to fight for their future, it is essential for lawmakers to listen to their voices and prioritize investment in education.
