Humpback whale trapped in fishing gear rescued near Dutch Harbor

A young male humpback whale was successfully rescued in a challenging operation in Iliuliuk Bay near Dutch Harbor, Alaska, after being tangled in an unknown line for several days. A team of biologists, whale experts, Coast Guardsmen, and other volunteers worked together to free the 30-foot marine mammal, which likely overwintered in Alaska. Using a 30-foot pole with a hook knife and live-streaming camera, the rescuers carefully cut the line from the whale’s mouth and fluke, allowing it to swim away freely. The successful untangling operation was a testament to the teamwork and dedication of the rescuers, as well as the support of the Dutch Harbor community in challenging weather conditions. NOAA’s marine mammal stranding network was instrumental in coordinating the rescue effort, with volunteers and experts coming together to assist in reporting and responding to entangled whales. The whale’s joyful response to regaining its mobility and swimming away showcased the importance of careful, patient, and collaborative rescue efforts in saving imperiled marine mammals. The rescue operation serves as a reminder of the ongoing threats faced by whales in the ocean and the need for continued conservation and protection efforts to ensure their survival.
