Judge Juan Merchan has blocked an attempt by Donald Trump’s lawyers to force NBC to turn over documents related to a documentary about Stormy Daniels. The ruling comes before a trial where Trump faces 34 felony charges for hush money payments to Daniels. Merchan called the subpoena a “fishing expedition” and ruled it did not meet legal standards. Trump faces multiple criminal cases, with the New York trial focusing on falsifying records to hide payments to Daniels. The indictment alleges Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, helped make payments to suppress negative stories during the 2016 campaign. Daniels is a key witness in the trial. The judge also denied a request to delay the trial until Supreme Court rulings on immunity claims. Trump’s lawyers previously failed to block Cohen and Daniels from testifying. NBC denied claims of collusion in releasing the documentary. The subpoena was deemed “far too broad” and speculative by Merchan. Trump faces federal cases in Florida and Washington, D.C., for hoarding classified documents and conspiracy related to the 2020 election, as well as a case in Georgia for election interference. The ruling marks another setback for Trump as he deals with multiple legal challenges.
