Indian authorities are in talks with the Russian government to bring back Indian citizens who were deceived into working for the Russian army. The discovery of a human trafficking network that lured people to Russia under false job promises has prompted India to take action against the agents involved. At least 35 Indian nationals were sent to Russia through this network, where they were trained for combat roles and deployed in the Russia-Ukraine war against their will. Some of the men were reported to be injured.
India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesperson warned citizens against falling for offers of support jobs with the Russian army, emphasizing the dangers and risks involved. The Indian embassy in Moscow confirmed the death of an Indian citizen who was recruited by the Russian army, although the circumstances were not disclosed.
This incident follows a similar situation involving Nepali nationals who were recruited to fight in Ukraine, with at least 14 Nepali nationals losing their lives. India, a longtime ally of Russia, has refrained from voting against Russia at the UN or criticizing President Putin following the Ukraine invasion in February 2022.
Efforts are underway to bring back the affected Indian citizens and hold the agents accountable for their deceitful actions. The government is committed to ensuring the safe return of its nationals and preventing such incidents from reoccurring in the future.
