South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley expressed her support for transgender athletes competing in women’s sports during a news conference ahead of her team’s NCAA Tournament championship game. Staley believes that if someone identifies as a woman, they should be allowed to participate in women’s sports. The topic of transgender athletes in sports has become a controversial issue, with opponents arguing that transgender athletes who were assigned male at birth may have a physical advantage over cisgender women. However, as of 2023, only a small number of transgender athletes have openly competed in college sports. Last month, college swimmers and volleyball players sued the NCAA over transgender woman Lia Thomas’ participation in the national swimming championships. Several states have passed laws banning transgender athletes from playing on K-12 and collegiate sports teams. Despite potential backlash, Staley stands by her opinion and is prepared to address any criticism.
