Kottayam Bishop’s Controversy makes headlines in Australian Press | Lifestyle Feature

In the early 20th century, Australia had strict ‘White Australia’ policies that aimed to keep non-Europeans out. However, in 1928, Bishop Alexander Chulaparambil from India visited Sydney for the International Eucharistic Congress, becoming possibly the first Malayali to visit Australia. The local press covered his arrival, noting his colorful attire and significant role as a native Indian bishop.

Chulaparambil, who declined to comment on Australia’s political situation, emphasized the Indianization of the Catholic Church in Travancore. He was well-received by the religious press for his English fluency and knowledge of Australia’s church affairs. The secular media also admired his traditional clothing.

Despite his importance, little is known about Chulaparambil’s contributions to the congress and his visits to other Australian cities. It was reported that he wanted to visit Tasmania and New Zealand, but there is no record of these trips. His visit to Australia may have been influenced by a stroke of fate, as lightning struck a church in Kottayam just before his departure.

If Bishop Chulaparambil documented his time in Australia, it would provide a unique perspective on this historic visit. His visit highlights the intersection of religion, culture, and politics in the early 20th century between India and Australia.
