Anticipation Builds at Ship Creek for King Salmon Catches

Anchorage Fishing Report: Salmon Season Slow to Start, Rainbow Trout Fishing Excellent

The 2024 fishing season in Anchorage is off to a slow start for king salmon at Ship Creek, with no reported catches yet. However, anglers are hopeful that the first king salmon will be caught soon. In the meantime, rainbow trout fishing has been excellent at Cheney, Delong, and Jewel lakes, with stocking in full swing. Spawning closures are in place for Campbell and Chester creeks to protect rainbow trout, and anglers are encouraged to try their luck at Airstrip Pond and Tangle Pond in Portage Valley or Mirror Lake near Chugiak over Memorial Day weekend.

For those fishing on base, a Department of Defense identification card or being accompanied by someone with one is required. Registration and permits are also necessary through RecAccess. It is important to note that catching northern pike in Anchorage lakes is discouraged, as they are not native to the area and were eradicated from Lower Fire Lake in 2022.

There are currently no emergency orders in place for the Anchorage management area, but anglers are advised to check for any updates before heading out on their fishing trips. To ensure compliance with regulations, anglers are reminded to purchase a 2024 sport fishing license and king stamp, which can easily be done through the ADF&G Mobile App or online store. For more information, contact the Anchorage Area Office at (907) 267-2218.
