As the sun shines and the snow melts in Alaska, anglers are gearing up for a new fishing season. Before heading out to rivers and lakes, residents and nonresidents alike must purchase a sport fishing license from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Licenses can be obtained online, in person at local offices or vendors, or through the ADF&G mobile app. Nonresidents and Alaskans over 16 and 18 are required to have a license.
In addition to a fishing license, anglers must also follow the department’s emergency orders, which may include closures or restrictions on certain fisheries. This year, the king salmon fisheries in the Susitna and Kenai River drainages are closed. Other changes, such as hatchery-only fishing, have been implemented in lower Kenai Peninsula streams. Anglers are advised to double-check all emergency orders before heading out.
The Alaska Lake Database and additional information can be found on the Fish and Game website. The Fishing Report, a weekly series providing updates and tips for anglers, will be released every Thursday between May 16 and September 14.
