M3.2 Earthquake Strikes Stevens Village, Alaska – Alaska Earthquake Center Reports

A 2.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in Interior Alaska on June 30, 2024, at 18:07:42 AKDT. The quake, with a depth of 7.1 miles, was located 28 miles northeast of Pump Station #6 and near several other towns and locations. Interior Alaska experiences seismic activity due to various tectonic structures, including right-lateral strike-slip faults and north-northeast-trending seismic zones.

The region has seen significant earthquakes in the past, including the 1937 M7.3 Salcha Earthquake, which caused ground failures but no surface rupture. Other notable events include the 1968 M7.1 Rampart, the 1985 M6.1 Dall City, and the 1995 M6.0 Minto Flats earthquakes. The Fairbanks Seismic Zone also experienced three M5-6 earthquakes in 1967.

The 1947 M7.2 thrusting event occurred at the front edge of the northern foothills of the Alaska Range, indicating ongoing thrusting deformation. Seismic activity decreases east of longitude 146 degrees west, between the Tintina Fault to the north and the Denali Fault to the south.

This recent earthquake serves as a reminder of the tectonic activity in Interior Alaska and the need for continued monitoring and research in the region. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for potential seismic events.
