Pittsburgh Penguins select Alaska’s Mac Swanson in 7th round of NHL Draft

Anchorage native Mac Swanson, a standout skater, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 7th round, 207th overall, in the 2024 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old had an impressive season in junior hockey, being named USHL’s Player of the Year and leading the Fargo Force to the Clark Cup Championship, where he was named playoff MVP.

Swanson will be attending the University of North Dakota this fall before reporting to the Penguins’ development camp next week. He had a stellar season in which he topped all USHL skaters with 51 assists and ranked third in total points with 77 in 55 games played. His achievements earned him multiple accolades, including USHL Player of the Year, Forward of the Year, and a first team All-USHL selection.

Being the son of former NHL player Brian Swanson, who was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 1994 and played for the ECHL’s Alaska Aces, Mac Swanson comes from a hockey pedigree. His success in junior hockey has led to his selection by the Penguins, and he will now look to continue his development at the University of North Dakota while preparing for his future with the NHL team.
