Update on Alaska Wildland Fires from BLM Alaska Fire Service

As of 5 p.m. on Sunday, there were 160 active wildfires across Alaska, with 19 new starts in the past 24 hours, totaling 298 fires and 388,194 acres burned. Updates on staffed fires in the BLM Alaska Fire Service’s protection area were provided.

Firefighters are working on various fires across the state, including Deep, East Twin, Lookout, Fickett, Riley, McDonald, Fork, Little Black, Naluk, Main, and the Grapefruit Complex. Crews are working on structure protection, mop-up operations, and containment efforts on these fires, with varying personnel and acreage sizes.

The Grapefruit Complex, comprising multiple fires, is being managed by an Alaska Complex Incident Management Team. Active fire behavior is causing concern, with the Globe Fire approaching a highway corridor. Poor visibility due to smoke is hampering firefighting efforts in the area.

The Alaska Fire Service, based in Fort Wainwright, is responsible for wildland fire suppression services over 240 million acres of land in Alaska. They work with various agencies and organizations to manage and contain wildfires in the state.

For more information and updates on the wildfires, visit the Alaska Fire Service’s website and social media channels. Public domain imagery is also available on their Flickr channel to complement news coverage of the ongoing fire situation in Alaska.
