A tragic incident occurred in south-east Iceland when an ice cave collapsed while a tour group was visiting the area, resulting in two people missing and two others seriously injured. The group of 25 people was on an organised tour of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier when the cave collapsed, trapping four people under the ice. Two individuals have been rescued and are currently in serious condition, while the search is ongoing for the remaining two individuals.
Icelandic officials have mobilized a response to the incident, with two helicopters from the coastguard dispatched to assist in the search and rescue operation. Ambulances and police have also been called to the scene to provide support and assistance for those affected by the collapse.
The glacier where the accident occurred is located near the popular tourist destination of Jökulsárlón, known for its glacial lagoon. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can be associated with exploring natural ice formations and highlights the importance of following safety guidelines provided by experienced guides when visiting such attractions.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event, and we hope for a swift and successful rescue of the missing individuals.
