Sen. JD Vance avoids answering questions on whether Trump’s immigration policy would result in family separations

Ohio Sen. JD Vance, former President Donald Trump’s running mate, avoided answering questions about whether Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy would lead to family separation during an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press.” Vance emphasized the need to stop illegal immigration and deport violent criminals as a priority. He criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, accusing her of supporting policies that led to family separations and children living with criminals.

When President Joe Biden and Harris took office, Biden revoked the zero-tolerance policy and established a family reunification task force that identified over 5,000 separated families. The Biden administration later collaborated with senators on a bipartisan immigration and border security plan, which saw support from both parties before ultimately losing GOP backing following Trump’s opposition.

Trump, in a recent visit to the U.S.-Mexico border, also avoided questions about potential family separations under his proposed zero-tolerance policy. He mentioned making provisions for mixed-status families but did not provide specifics. Vance’s remarks align with Trump’s immigration stance, emphasizing the need to address violent criminals and control illegal immigration without directly addressing concerns about family separation.
