This year, union members are not only voting on labor issues

Francine Eason and Andrew Gangwer, both union members, prioritize affordability but have differing political allegiances, with Eason supporting Vice President Kamala Harris and Gangwer backing former President Donald Trump. Gangwer, an operations specialist at Anheuser-Busch, believes in Republicans’ pro-business messaging for the economic benefits it brings to his union. On the other hand, Eason, a housekeeper in Philadelphia, sees the advantages that being in a union has brought her in terms of fair treatment and wages.

Despite efforts by the Biden-Harris administration to strengthen support among organized labor, there are limits to this as seen by members like Gangwer who align with Trump due to his stance on taxes and law and order. Union members have a diverse range of interests and worries, making them no monolithic voting bloc.

Harris has garnered support from various labor groups, emphasizing the importance of strong unions for a strong America. However, some, like Teamsters President Sean O’Brien, have praised Trump’s stance on certain issues. Others, like Francine Eason, see Harris as a champion who will deliver for union members.

The ongoing debate around issues such as inflation, labor rights, and economic policies influences union members like Jeff Egkan and Cecilia Ortiz in their decision-making. While Egkan remains a Democrat and plans to vote for Harris due to her promises on workers’ rights, Ortiz switched her support from Trump to Biden and now intends to vote for Harris in the upcoming election due to her advocacy for union jobs.

The labor movement has seen a rise in activity during the pandemic, which could influence how rank-and-file members vote. However, for some like Gangwer, the strength of the unions is a source of assurance regardless of political outcomes.
