As Israeli forces approach, one of Gaza’s remaining hospitals is rapidly emptying

One of Gaza’s last functioning hospitals, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, is emptying out as Israel has ordered the evacuation of nearby areas and signaled a possible ground operation. Although the military has not ordered the hospital’s evacuation, patients and residents fear it may become involved in fighting or targeted by Israeli raids. Israeli forces have invaded hospitals in the past, accusing Hamas of using them for military purposes, which Palestinian health officials deny.

Evacuation orders now cover 84% of Gaza’s territory, resulting in around 90% of the population being forced from their homes. Many have been displaced multiple times, with thousands seeking shelter in overcrowded tent camps along the coast. The situation is dire for those forced to leave hospitals and medical facilities, as they worry about access to medication and treatment.

Doctors Without Borders has considered suspending wound care due to an explosion near the hospital causing panic and accelerating the evacuation. The hospital was treating over 600 patients before the orders, with around 100 patients remaining, including those in critical care. The Israeli military claims it is operating against Hamas in the area but has assured Palestinian health officials that hospitals do not need to be evacuated.

The war in Gaza began when Hamas militants attacked Israel, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. The Israeli offensive has caused significant destruction and casualties in Gaza, with many hostages still being held by Hamas. The situation is dire for those in Gaza as the conflict continues.
