North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently oversaw a test of attack drones developed domestically in the country, as reported by state media KCNA. The test involved drones crashing into a tank target, with photos showing the moment of impact. Kim, who has been focused on modernizing North Korea’s military amid tensions with the US and South Korea, emphasized the importance of drones in modern warfare during the test.
Kim visited the Drone Institute of North Korea’s Academy of Defense Science to supervise the test and called for the accelerated development and production of various drone systems for military use. These systems included exploding drones for infantry and special operations units, reconnaissance and attack drones, as well as underwater suicide attack drones.
North Korea has been increasing its tactical warfare capabilities involving missiles and artillery aimed at South Korea, while also making advancements in missile and nuclear programs despite international sanctions. The drone test coincided with US and South Korean military exercises aimed at improving their joint defense capabilities against North Korea’s threats.
The test marks a significant step in North Korea’s efforts to enhance its military capabilities, and signals the importance that Kim places on integrating drones into the country’s defense strategy. The test also comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, with military exercises and saber-rattling continuing between North Korea and its adversaries.
