A water treatment plant in Bulgaria is leading the way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the water industry, with potential for scaling up to achieve net zero emissions. The Kubratovo wastewater treatment plant in Sofia, operated by Sofiyska Voda, part of the Veolia group, is one of the most energy-efficient in Europe. The plant utilizes biogas produced during the treatment process to generate electricity and heat, covering more than 100% of its energy needs and saving approximately 70,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
The efficient digesters at the Kubratovo plant set it apart from others in the industry, enabling the capture and utilization of gases like methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By harnessing these gases through cogeneration, the plant prevents their release into the atmosphere while also using them as an energy source. This sustainable practice has earned the plant Gold Standard certification for reducing emissions.
Plans are underway to further increase biogas production at the plant, with new facilities being commissioned and the installation of photovoltaic systems. The success of the Kubratovo plant serves as a model for other water treatment facilities, inspiring them to achieve energy self-sufficiency and reduce their carbon footprint. The plant’s efforts align with the EU’s Water Wise campaign, #WaterWiseEU, which aims to promote sustainable water management practices and raise awareness about the importance of protecting Europe’s water systems. Through initiatives like Water Matters, in partnership with Euronews and the European Commission, individuals and communities are encouraged to become #WaterWiseEU.
