The United Nations has been forced to evacuate its humanitarian aid hub in Gaza for the second time since the start of the war after new Israeli evacuation orders shut down the main UN operations center. Despite the challenges, UN aid operations in Gaza continue, with spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stating that conditions have made it extremely difficult for aid deliveries. However, the UN is determined to stay in Gaza and continue its humanitarian efforts.
The evacuation orders have affected 19 neighborhoods in the northern Gaza Strip and Deir el-Balah, impacting UN and NGO staff and their families living in the area. In addition, UN warehouses, water resources, health facilities, and emergency shelters for displaced people have also been affected. The timing of the evacuation has posed a challenge, particularly with an upcoming polio vaccination campaign that requires a large number of UN staff to enter Gaza.
The International Rescue Committee has called for the protection of civilians and humanitarian access, emphasizing the importance of continuing aid operations during the dire situation for civilians. The ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel has resulted in significant casualties and displacement in Gaza, further highlighting the critical need for humanitarian assistance.
Despite the challenges and threats faced by UN and humanitarian personnel, efforts to deliver aid and support to the people of Gaza continue, albeit with significant obstacles and risks. There is a pressing need for all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and ensure unimpeded humanitarian access in the region.
