Greek port Volos littered with dead fish after flooding

In September last year, Storm Daniel hit Greece, causing extensive damage and claiming at least 17 lives. The storm destroyed large areas of cotton crops, which Greece is the largest producer of in the EU. The Thessaly Plain, a major agricultural region, was particularly affected with farmland flooded and crops destroyed. Additionally, Lake Karla, which had previously been reduced in size to increase farmland and combat Malaria, swelled due to the heavy rains.

As floodwaters receded, freshwater fish from the lake were forced downstream into the saltwater of the Pagasetic Gulf in Volos, where many likely died. Cleanup efforts have been in progress since the storm, with most of the fish being removed by trawlers and excavators. The fish are then being dumped into trucks for disposal.

The aftermath of Storm Daniel has had a significant impact on both the agricultural and natural ecosystems in Greece. The destruction of crops and loss of fish have caused economic and environmental challenges for the nation. However, efforts to clean up and restore the affected areas are ongoing, with hopes of recovering from the devastation caused by the storm.
