Danilo Cavalcante, a convicted killer who escaped from a Chester County lockup and was on the run for two weeks, pleaded guilty to escape and burglary charges. He was sentenced to an additional 15 to 30 years on top of his existing life sentence without parole for killing his ex-girlfriend. Cavalcante, who did not speak in court, had escaped by climbing up between two walls in a jail exercise yard, climbing over razor wire, and jumping from a roof. He had been convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend to prevent her from reporting charges against him related to a 2017 slaying in Brazil.
During his time on the run, Cavalcante stole a truck, food, clothing, and other items from people’s homes. One homeowner caught him in their garage stealing a rifle and fired shots at him, but he managed to evade capture. He was eventually caught by searchers using thermal imaging and K-9 search dogs.
Cavalcante, originally from Brazil, expressed regret for his actions and stated that his education stopped in fourth grade. The judge encouraged him to find a way to positively impact someone’s life, even while in prison. His defense lawyer noted that Cavalcante quickly agreed to plead guilty, showing remorse for the fear he caused during his escape.
