A man named Sheridan Dirk Fogle, 54, has been charged with murder after the remains of a woman named Penni Whiteside were found buried in the yard of a South Carolina home. Whiteside had been missing for two years before her remains were discovered under a firepit earlier this summer. She was last seen in May 2022 and had been living with Fogle at the time. The nature of their relationship is unclear. Neighbors had raised suspicions that Whiteside may have been buried near the residence, leading to the search that uncovered her remains.
The Horry County Coroner’s office confirmed Whiteside’s identity and found her buried in the yard of the home. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Fogle was arrested at the 1800 block of Broughton Street in Orangeburg and is currently being held in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Horry County with no bail set. It is unknown if he has legal representation at this time.
The Myrtle Beach Police Department described the crime as a tragic loss of life and a senseless act of violence, urging the community to support Whiteside’s family and friends. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and it is unclear when Fogle’s next court appearance will be.
