Russia-Ukraine War: A Recap of Key Events on Day 918

The situation on Saturday, August 31, 2024, is tense as fighting escalates between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian attacks on Belgorod and Russia’s retaliation in Kharkiv have resulted in numerous casualties, with five people killed in Belgorod and at least six dead in Kharkiv. Russia has launched over 400 missiles and drones at Ukraine this week, leading to further fatalities and injuries.

In response to a crashed F-16 warplane during a Russian bombardment, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has fired the country’s air force commander and appointed a replacement. Ukrainian forces have made advancements into Russia’s Kursk region, with General Oleksandr Syrskii stating they have moved up to 2km in their cross-border incursion.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has declared Ukraine’s incursion into the Kursk region as legitimate self-defence. However, a Russian court has sentenced journalist Sergei Mikhailov to eight years in prison for spreading false information about the Russian army. Additionally, Ukraine has urged Mongolia to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin on an ICC warrant for the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children. The diplomatic tensions continue to escalate as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of de-escalating.
