Britons urged to reduce bacon and cheese intake to lower heart attack risk and high blood pressure


People in the UK are being urged to reduce their consumption of high-salt foods such as ham, bacon, and cheese in order to lower their risk of heart attacks and strokes. High salt intake contributes to high blood pressure, the leading cause of avoidable death in the country. Up to 4 million Britons may have undiagnosed high blood pressure, a condition that often goes unnoticed due to lack of symptoms.

Blood Pressure UK is advising adults to check their blood pressure regularly and make lifestyle changes such as reducing salt intake, eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercising more. The NHS recommends consuming no more than 6g of salt per day, but average intake has remained largely unchanged in recent years.

Treating high blood pressure costs the NHS in England over £2bn a year. Bacon lovers were cautioned that there is a high salt content in popular products, with some containing almost double the daily recommended limit in just one serving. Blood Pressure UK recommends avoiding adding salt at the table, limiting processed foods, and being cautious with products such as stock cubes and soy sauce.

The charity’s estimate of 4 million undiagnosed high blood pressure sufferers aligns with data from NHS England and the Office for National Statistics. NHS England is launching a new initiative to offer blood pressure checks during routine dental and eye tests, in an effort to detect undiagnosed hypertension. Globally, it is estimated that 1.28 billion adults have high blood pressure, with the condition often poorly controlled.
