Politicians express sorrow and anger over hostages, call for end to war with Hamas

Condolences poured in from the White House, members of Congress, and political campaigns after the bodies of six hostages were recovered by the Israeli Defense Forces. The hostages, including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, were identified as Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Master Sgt. Ori Danino. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris expressed outrage over the killings, with Harris calling Hamas an evil terrorist organization that must be held accountable for these crimes. Former President Donald Trump blamed Biden and Harris for the deaths, while members of Congress focused on condemning Hamas and expressing heartbreak. There were calls from both sides of the aisle for the remaining hostages to be released and for Hamas to be held responsible for the deaths. World leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, also expressed horror and called for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages. The hostage crisis began on Oct. 7 when Hamas carried out a terrorist attack that resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people in Israel and the taking of over 250 hostages. Negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage release have not been successful, leading to ongoing calls for their safe return.
