The US seizes Nicolás Maduro’s aircraft and transports it to Florida – The Guardian

The United States has seized the private jet belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and flown it to Florida, according to a report by The Guardian. The seizure is part of ongoing efforts by the US to pressure Maduro’s government, which it considers illegitimate, to step down.

The Gulfstream Aerospace G550 jet, which is estimated to be worth $20 million, was allegedly used by Maduro and other Venezuelan officials to travel to countries around the world. The US Department of Justice issued a warrant for the aircraft’s seizure on the grounds that it was involved in illicit activities.

The seizure of Maduro’s jet marks a significant escalation in tensions between the US and Venezuela. The US has imposed numerous sanctions on Venezuela in recent years in an attempt to force Maduro out of power and support opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who is recognized by the US and several other countries as Venezuela’s legitimate president.

The Maduro government has condemned the seizure of the jet as an illegal act of aggression by the US. Venezuela’s defense minister, Vladimir Padrino, called it a “criminal” action that violates international law.

The US has not yet announced what it plans to do with the seized jet. It is possible that the aircraft will be sold off or used for other government purposes.

Maduro has been in power in Venezuela since 2013 and has faced widespread protests and international criticism for his authoritarian rule and economic mismanagement. The US and its allies have called for free and fair elections in Venezuela to allow for a peaceful transition of power.
