Ticketmaster is facing scrutiny in the U.K. after Oasis fans struggled to secure tickets for the band’s reunion tour due to dynamic pricing. Prices shot up while fans were in queues online, causing many to abandon their purchases or resort to ticket-resale sites. U.K. culture minister Lisa Nandy plans to look into Ticketmaster’s use of dynamic pricing to ensure tickets are sold at fair prices and to end “rip-off resales.” The government will hold a consultation on ticket resale websites in the autumn, with dynamic pricing now included in the scope. This is not the first time Ticketmaster has faced backlash, as they also came under scrutiny in the U.S. last year after a ticket fiasco involving Taylor Swift tickets. Senator Amy Klobuchar highlighted how Ticketmaster’s dominant market position can lead to high fees, disruptions, and cancellations for customers. The lack of competition in the live entertainment and ticketing industry can harm customers and artists, leading to the need for better services and fair prices through increased competition.
