Bobi Wine, opposition leader in Uganda, discharged from hospital after treatment | Political Updates

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was discharged from the hospital after being hit by a tear-gas canister in the leg during a confrontation with police. The incident occurred when police fired at Wine’s convoy in Kampala. Wine underwent surgery to remove canister fragments and is now stable. His party, the National Unity Platform, accused police of targeting him. His lawyer stated that police fired the canister indiscriminately during a meeting with supporters. The NUP spokesperson requested Wine be discharged as operatives in civilian clothes attempted to access his room. Police claimed they were trying to stop Wine’s team from marching down a road, leading to the altercation. This incident is another in a series of confrontations between the opposition and President Yoweri Museveni’s government, which critics accuse of stifling dissent. Museveni, who has ruled for nearly 40 years, denies these allegations. The police have promised an investigation into the events. This incident follows a crackdown on anti-corruption rallies in July and the arrests of protesters against an oil project in Uganda. Wine’s supporters fear for his safety as tensions continue to rise.
