The families of American hostages held by Hamas are urging the White House to consider a unilateral deal with the terrorist organization to secure their release. The Biden administration is discussing this option as negotiations with Israel stall. There are four Americans still held by Hamas, believed to be alive, and three others whose remains are being sought. The administration had previously considered negotiating a unilateral deal if cease-fire talks with Israel failed, but the idea was met with opposition from top officials. However, the administration did compile a list of prisoners whom Hamas might want released in exchange for the hostages. The U.S. has also made preliminary outreach to Hamas through Qatar, but no formal offer has been made. One official believes a unilateral deal is unrealistic because Hamas demands concessions from Israel, not the U.S. The administration remains committed to returning the hostages, but negotiations have not progressed. The possibility of a “take it or leave it” deal with Israel and Hamas is also being considered. President Biden remains optimistic about reaching a positive outcome in negotiations.
