The trend of extreme decluttering and organizing has reached unprecedented levels, with some experts warning of its negative effects on mental and physical health. The Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers (APDO) has expressed concerns about the pressure people feel to achieve perfection through minimalist living and aesthetic appeal.
In response, APDO is dedicating its National Organising Week to the theme of “back to basics”, emphasizing progress over perfection and focusing on basic needs and functions rather than aesthetic appeal. The increasing obsession with extreme tidiness has led to record attendance at events like the Clean and Tidy Home Show in London, where cleaning influencers with millions of followers promote the joy of organizing.
While curated visuals of perfectly organized fridges and airport trays may seem like an expression of creativity and values, some psychologists and experts believe that the pressure to simplify our lives to such an extent is causing more stress than joy. Maintaining such excessive order can be impractical and lead to burnout, as well as a sense of alienation from one’s true self.
As the trend of extreme decluttering continues to grow on social media platforms like TikTok, experts are cautioning against the deceptive nature of these images and the pressure they place on individuals to conform to an unrealistic standard. The push for perfection in organizing our lives may be causing more harm than good, leading some to question the authenticity and value of these seemingly curated snapshots of tidiness.
