A shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia left two teachers and two students dead, with one teacher and eight students injured. The suspected shooter, a 14-year-old student, has been charged with four counts of felony murder as an adult. Students were forced to hide in classrooms during the 30-minute ordeal, many were traumatized and in shock after learning that their geometry teacher and football coach, Richard Aspinwall, was among the victims.
Students like Cameron Leroy, Isaiah Hooks, and Jaden Hunter, who experienced the shooting firsthand, were in disbelief that the active shooter drills they had practiced for years were being applied in a real-life scenario. The school had utilized new technology for teachers to alert law enforcement in case of an active shooter, which was used during the incident. The aftermath of the shooting saw physical injuries being treated, as well as emotional trauma in the form of panic attacks and anxiety.
The shooting has left the small Georgia community reeling and students questioning their safety in school. Ariel Bowling, one of the students who experienced the shooting, expressed fear and trauma at the thought of returning to school. Some students are calling for increased security measures in the wake of the tragedy. The school was closed for the rest of the week, and grief counselors were made available to help students cope with the traumatic events they experienced. Parents were relieved to be able to reconnect with their children after the chaos, but the effects of the shooting will be long-lasting for many.
