Kazakhstan’s vast prairies set to compete in World Nomad Games in Astana

Over 2,000 athletes from 89 countries gather in Astana, Kazakhstan for the World Nomad Games, showcasing ancient warfare skills and cultural games. The bi-annual event aims to preserve ethno-cultural traditions and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. Horse wrestling, horseback archery, falconry, and martial arts are among the 21 disciplines featured. Kazakh Culture and Information Minister Aida Balayeva sees the games as a way to highlight the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage. The event, running from 8 to 13 September, welcomes participants from around the world, including countries with little nomadic tradition in the past. Kazakh Tourism chairman Kairat Sadvakassov notes the growing global interest in the games, with past editions held in Kyrgyzstan and Turkey. The World Nomad Games provide a unique opportunity to showcase Kazakhstan’s spirit and involve athletes from varied backgrounds in ancient sports disciplines.
