The father of the 14-year-old charged with murder in a school shooting in Georgia bought his son an AR-15 style rifle as a gift after the two were previously interviewed by law enforcement regarding threats of a school shooting. The teenager, Colt Gray, fatally shot four people at Apalachee High School, leading to his arrest. The suspect had shown interest in prior mass shootings, such as the one at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The FBI received a tip about online threats made on Discord, a chat platform, that were linked to the teenager’s father, but the local authorities did not find enough evidence to tie the father or son to the account. The teenager denied making any threats and said his account had been hacked multiple times. Despite the previous investigation, the teen was able to enroll in a new school in Barrow County, where the shooting took place. Some believe that the shooting could have been prevented if authorities had taken the previous threats more seriously. The sheriff’s office, however, maintains that there was not enough evidence at the time to arrest the teenager. Parents and students are grappling with the tragedy and questioning why more was not done to prevent it.
