A recent report by United Nations-backed human rights experts has revealed harrowing human rights violations and potential war crimes committed by warring parties in Sudan. The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has spread to 14 out of 18 states, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and millions of displacements.
The experts have called for an independent and impartial force to be deployed in Sudan without delay to protect civilians, along with an expansion of an arms embargo to the entire country. The report based on interviews with survivors and witnesses documents attacks on civilians, including rape, torture, and indiscriminate air attacks.
Additionally, the experts urged for an immediate end to the flow of weapons and support to any side in the conflict. Sudan’s military has accused the United Arab Emirates of supporting the RSF, a claim the UAE has denied.
The experts also called for full cooperation with the International Criminal Court, including the surrender of indicted individuals such as former President Omar al-Bashir. Efforts by Sudanese authorities to investigate and prosecute crimes have been criticized for lack of impartiality.
The report serves as a wake-up call for the international community to take decisive action to support survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, and bring an end to the conflict in Sudan. In August, the United States hosted talks aimed at ending the war, making progress on aid access but not achieving a ceasefire.
