Kentucky police in London responded to reports of an active shooter situation near Interstate 75, where multiple individuals were shot in traffic. London mayor Randall Weddle confirmed that seven people were injured, but not all were wounded by gunfire, with some being injured in a vehicle accident. Thankfully, there were no fatalities reported from the incident.
The sheriff’s office identified a person of interest in connection with the shooting, warning that he should be considered armed and dangerous. Authorities advised the public not to approach the individual.
The incident began just before 6pm local time when multiple vehicles were fired upon on the interstate in Laurel County. The shots were believed to be coming from a wooded area or an overpass. Kentucky state trooper Scottie Pennington urged people to stay inside as the suspect had not been apprehended.
Kentucky governor Andy Beshear also addressed the situation, urging residents to avoid the area and offering thoughts and prayers for those involved. London, where the incident took place, is a small city with a population of about 8,000 residents located approximately 100 miles northwest of the state capital Frankfort. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
