American Turkish activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi was remembered by friends as a compassionate and joyful person who dedicated her life to social justice causes. Known for her empathy and drive to support oppressed people, Eygi was fatally shot by Israeli forces in the West Bank while attending a demonstration against an illegal settler outpost on September 6. Friends say she had been fighting against injustices since a young age and was committed to the liberation of all people.
Eygi, who grew up in Seattle, Washington, was described as a social justice warrior who brought people together through her hospitality, food, and advocacy. Her killing has left a void in the communities she was a part of, and her friends are calling for an independent investigation into her death. Despite statements from US officials calling the killing “unacceptable,” they have not backed an independent probe.
Eygi’s friends are urging the US government to take her case seriously and hold those responsible for her death accountable. Calls for justice have come from Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, Senator Patty Murray, and Washington state legislators, among others. Eygi’s friends vow to keep her memory alive and continue fighting for the causes she believed in, similar to the legacy of activist Rachel Corrie, who was killed by the Israeli military in 2003. Eygi’s friends say they will honor her memory by carrying on her commitment to social justice and advocating for marginalized communities both in the US and around the world.
