Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in Thursday’s game against the Buffalo Bills after colliding head-first with Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Tagovailoa walked off the field under his own power and was reported to be conscious, awake, alert, and with full movement in his extremities. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Tagovailoa was in good spirits in the locker room, but would not provide a timeline for his return.
Tagovailoa has a history of concussions, having sustained two in the 2022 season. The first concussion caused controversy as the NFL Players Association believed he wasn’t properly evaluated for a concussion after a game against the Bills. Despite his parents suggesting he consider retirement after his concussions, Tagovailoa consulted with a doctor and decided to continue playing.
The Dolphins signed Tagovailoa to a lucrative contract in July, and he led the NFL in passing yards last season. Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson expressed his concern for Tagovailoa’s well-being after the game and wished him a speedy recovery.
Tagovailoa, who is in his fifth season with the Dolphins, has a career record of 33-19 with 82 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. The team will take Tagovailoa’s recovery day by day and assess his condition moving forward.
