Bradford named as UK City of Culture for 2025, celebrating youth and diversity
The city of Bradford has been selected as the UK City of Culture for 2025, becoming the fourth city to be chosen for the government’s prestigious programme. The city, which is the second-largest in West Yorkshire with a population of around 560,000 people, is known for its youthful demographic, with a quarter of its residents being under 20 years old.
As part of its City of Culture programme, Bradford will host a diverse range of events throughout the year, showcasing theatre, art, music, and film. The programme aims to celebrate the city’s rich cultural heritage and put its young population at the forefront of the festivities.
Local artists and organizations, as well as national cultural programmes, will be highlighted in the events, with a focus on engaging the community in various art forms. From a drawing project inspired by Bradford-born artist David Hockney to a series of films curated by local director Clio Barnard, the programme promises to be a vibrant and inclusive celebration of Bradford’s cultural scene.
Shanaz Gulzar, Creative Director of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, expressed excitement about the upcoming events, stating that it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase Bradford’s extraordinary talent and cultural heritage. The City of Culture competition, which is held every four years, aims to promote culture-led regeneration in selected cities. Bradford’s appointment as the 2025 UK City of Culture is expected to boost investment in the city’s cultural sector and drive further growth and development throughout the year.
