Sierra Leonean ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince passed away at the age of 29, as announced by her family on social media. No cause of death was given. Born as Mabinty Bangura in Sierra Leone during the civil war, DePrince was brought to an orphanage and later adopted by a couple in New Jersey. She overcame challenges such as vitiligo and malnourishment to pursue a career in ballet, ultimately earning a scholarship to study at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. DePrince gained fame after appearing in the documentary “First Position” in 2011 and went on to perform with the Boston Ballet as a second soloist. She also made appearances in TV shows like “Dancing with the Stars” and Beyonce’s “Lemonade” album. Fellow ballerinas, such as Misty Copeland, paid tribute to DePrince for her determination and perseverance in the face of adversity. DePrince’s story of resilience and success has inspired many around the world, and she will be remembered as an unforgettable inspiration to all who knew her.
