Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) recently hosted its first annual 9/11 memorial stair climb in honor of the victims of the September 11th attacks. The event, organized by the base’s fire department, aimed to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tragic day and to pay tribute to the first responders who lost their lives while trying to save others.
Participants in the stair climb gathered at the base’s fire station and donned full firefighting gear before beginning the challenging task of climbing the equivalent of 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the World Trade Center towers. The climb served as a physical and emotional reminder of the sacrifices made on that fateful day two decades ago.
The event drew a diverse group of participants, including military personnel, firefighters, police officers, and members of the community, all coming together to honor the memory of the nearly 3,000 people who perished in the attacks. Despite the somber mood, participants were filled with a sense of camaraderie and pride in honoring the fallen heroes.
Colonel Robert Davis, the base commander, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to remember and reflect on the events of 9/11. He emphasized the importance of never forgetting the sacrifices made by first responders and the impact of that day on American history.
As the participants completed the stair climb, they were met with cheers and applause, reinforcing the sense of unity and solidarity that the event aimed to promote. The first annual 9/11 memorial stair climb at JBER was a powerful and moving tribute to the heroes of September 11th and a reminder of the resilience and strength of the American spirit.
