The San Francisco 49ers have placed star running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve due to lingering calf and Achilles tendon injuries, meaning he will miss at least four more games. McCaffrey got hurt early in training camp and had a late scratch for the season opener after experiencing pain following practice. The 2021 All-Pro led the NFL last season in yards from scrimmage and touchdowns, but has a history of injuries, missing 23 games in his final two seasons with the Carolina Panthers.
In McCaffrey’s absence, backup Jordan Mason stepped up with a strong performance in a victory over the New York Jets, rushing for 147 yards and a touchdown. The 49ers will rely heavily on Mason, as well as fourth-round rookie Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor Jr., who is also on the active roster. The team has elevated safety Tracy Walker III from the practice squad for an upcoming game against Minnesota.
McCaffrey’s absence is a significant loss for the 49ers, who will need to adjust their offensive game plan to compensate for his versatility and production. Mason will likely continue to lead the rushing attack until McCaffrey is able to return to the field. The team is hopeful for McCaffrey’s recovery and eventual return to form as a key player for the offense.
