Oscar Piastri emerged victorious at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, leading McLaren to the top of the constructors’ standings following a dramatic race that saw a collision between Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez on the penultimate lap. The race was dominated by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who took pole but eventually finished second after being overtaken by Piastri. George Russell of Mercedes finished third after the collision between Sainz and Perez.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull finished fifth, just behind Lando Norris of McLaren who started 15th and managed to secure fourth place with the fastest lap bonus point. The result saw McLaren move 20 points ahead of Red Bull in the standings with seven rounds remaining in the season.
Piastri described the race as one of the most stressful of his career, with him soaking up pressure from Leclerc to secure his second career win. The race also saw strong performances from Fernando Alonso, Alex Albon, and rookie Franco Colapinto.
Lewis Hamilton made an impressive recovery from starting in the pit lane to finish in ninth place, while British rookie Oliver Bearman collected the final point for Haas as a stand-in for Kevin Magnussen. The race ended with a collision between Sainz and Perez, leaving both drivers questioning what had happened.
