Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is being investigated for allegedly collecting a whale specimen 20 years ago. He received a letter from the National Marine Fisheries Institute this week regarding the incident. Kennedy responded by baselessly accusing the agency of being involved in whale deaths. His daughter previously described an incident involving a dead whale that her father had cut the head off and bungee-corded to their car 30 years ago. Kennedy denied ever killing a whale and criticized the media for focusing on “gossipy nonsense.”
Kennedy made these comments during a campaign event with former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard for Donald Trump. He endorsed Trump in August and has been actively campaigning for him. After a 2012 story resurfaced about the whale incident, an environmental group called for an investigation into Kennedy’s actions. Kennedy had also previously faced criticism for disposing of a dead bear in Central Park, which is against the law.
The National Marine Fisheries Service, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, did not comment on the investigation. Kennedy refused to discuss details of the incident, preferring to focus on “serious policy issues.” The media has been accused of sensationalizing the story, while Kennedy’s critics are calling for consequences for his actions.
