Nine people were injured in central Israel as they ran to shelters after air raid sirens sounded on Sunday morning. A ballistic missile from Yemen crossed into Israel, landing in an open field outside Tel Aviv. This led to the first air raid sirens in months, including at Ben Gurion airport. Video footage showed a fire in a rural area near Tel Aviv with smoke coming from a crater, as well as fragments of a missile landing in a train station in Modiin.
There were no deaths or serious damage reported, with the injured individuals said to be in mild condition and receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. The initial report from the IDF identified the missile as surface-to-surface and launched from the East in central Israel, but later clarified that it was launched from Yemen.
Houthi leader Nasr Al-Din Amer stated that this incident was just the beginning, indicating ongoing retaliation against Israel for their aggression against the Palestinian people. The conflict between Israel and Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels has escalated over the past year, with previous incidents involving drones and airstrikes.
In response to previous attacks, Israel conducted airstrikes on Houthi controlled areas in Yemen. It is still unclear if there will be further retaliation from the IDF following the most recent missile strike.
