United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the situation in Lebanon, stating that the world cannot afford for Lebanon to become another Gaza. Despite some prominent Israeli figures drawing parallels between Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, the two groups are quite different. Hezbollah is a part of Lebanon’s political and military landscape, while Hamas governs Gaza entirely. Both groups have alliances with Iran, but their relationships with the country vary.
Israel has accused both Hamas and Hezbollah of using civilian areas as shields for their military activities. Israel has targeted civilian areas in both Gaza and Lebanon, resulting in significant civilian casualties and displacement. Israel claims to be trying to avoid civilian casualties by issuing evacuation notices, but the impact on civilians remains severe. Thousands of people have been killed or injured in the ongoing strikes, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced.
The tactics employed by Israel in both Gaza and Lebanon are similar, as the country seeks a quick end to the conflict. Israel’s strategy aims to exert pressure on Hezbollah without getting involved in a prolonged ground invasion. Despite the differences between Hamas and Hezbollah, Israel’s approach to both groups remains consistent. The Israeli government hopes to avoid being drawn into a prolonged conflict in Lebanon, as it has been in Gaza.
