Sheriff from Kentucky pleads not guilty in fatal shooting of judge charge

Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges after shooting Judge Kevin Mullins in his chambers following an argument. Stines, held in the Leslie County jail, appeared virtually for his arraignment and was appointed a temporary public defender. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but initial reports suggest it was the result of an argument inside the courthouse. Mullins, 54, was shot multiple times and died at the scene, leaving the small community shocked and devastated. The case, due for a preliminary hearing on October 1, will be handled by Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman and Commonwealth’s Attorney Jackie Steele due to conflicts of interest in the local prosecutor’s office. Family and colleagues remembered Mullins as witty and fun to be around, and his mother was touched by the outpouring of support following his funeral service. The community is still grappling with the tragedy that has shaken them to the core, as they try to come to terms with the loss of the beloved judge.
