The United States is currently experiencing a divisive campaign season, but a vice presidential debate between Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota provided moments of calm and agreement that inspired a sense of bromance between the candidates. The debate was recreated on “Saturday Night Live,” with repertory player Heidi Gardner playing CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell and comedians Jim Gaffigan and Bowen Yang portraying Walz and Vance, respectively. The candidates found common ground and even joked about their past statements, leading to a sense of camaraderie. Vice President Kamala Harris, along with her husband Douglas Emhoff and President Joe Biden, watched the debate on TV in disbelief as the candidates unexpectedly got along. The debate ended with a humorous exchange in which Walz asked Vance if he admitted that Donald Trump lost the election, to which Vance responded by focusing on the future. Overall, the debate was portrayed as a success, with Walz declaring victory and Harris noting that it made no difference in the polls. The episode of “SNL” was hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze, with musical guest Coldplay.
